Etoposide belongs to a class of medications known as topoisomerase inhibitors. Etoposide interferes with the DNA replication process by inhibiting the activity of an enzyme called topoisomerase II. This enzyme is involved in the winding and unwinding of DNA strands during cell division. Inhibition of topoisomerase II leads to the accumulation of DNA breaks, preventing cancer cells from dividing and proliferating.
Can be used in laboratory experiments to study its effects on cell cycles, DNA damage responses, and apoptosis (programmed cell death).
