Timentin contains two antibiotics: ticarcillin (a penicillin) and clavulanate potassium (a beta-lactamase inhibitor). The combination of ticarcillin and clavulanate enhances the spectrum of antibacterial activity by protecting ticarcillin from degradation by certain bacterial enzymes.
Ticarcillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, disrupting the integrity of the bacterial cell wall and leading to bacterial cell lysis. Clavulanate potassium works by inhibiting beta-lactamases, enzymes produced by bacteria that can inactivate beta-lactam antibiotics, such as ticarcillin. This combination is effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria, including those producing beta-lactamases.
